No other federal state has a comparable density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as Saxony-Anhalt. For centuries, the cultural landscape in the middle of Germany has set the pace for ideas and developments that have had a lasting impact on Europe and the world. UNESCO has designated five cultural sites, two biosphere reserves and valuable documents as World Heritage of Humanity.
Our Inspiring Six illustrate the close links and spatial density of these sites.
Inspiration times 6 in Europe's Heart
Bauhaus
The Bauhaus reached its heyday in Dessau. The seven-year work of the art and design school left a huge architectural mark. Even today, the Bauhaus building still impresses not only those interested in culture; the twelve Bauhaus buildings that are open to the public attract visitors. The new Bauhaus Museum presents the collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation for the first time.
Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom
The Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz is famous for its masterful landscape design and invites visitors to stroll and linger. Prince Franz had the Wörlitz cultural landscape created in the style of English landscape parks. Enlightenment ideals and humanist ideas were literally woven into the landscape and can still be experienced today.
Sky Disc
The Nebra Sky Disc is the world's oldest known concrete representation of the cosmos. The bronze disc measures 32 centimetres in diameter and shows the sun (or full moon), crescent moon and a total of 32 golden stars. It has its permanent place in the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale). In 2013, the Sky Disc was added to the Memory of the World.
Luther Memorials
Saxony-Anhalt is closely linked to the Reformation and the life and work of Martin Luther. Authentic locations bring the history of the Reformation and Luther's life to life in Lutherstadt Eisleben, the place where Luther was born and died, in Mansfeld, where the reformer grew up, and in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, where he spent the longest part of his life with his family.
Naumburg Cathedral
A masterpiece of human creativity rises out of the hilly landscape between the Saale and Unstrut rivers: Naumburg Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is one of the most important cultural monuments of the High Middle Ages. The 800-year-old donor figures are particularly attractive, with the figure of Uta von Naumburg standing out and achieving world fame.

World Heritage City of Quedlinburg
Winding alleyways, half-timbered houses from different eras, medieval squares, modern art behind centuries-old walls and the Stiftsberg with its castle and Romanesque collegiate church - European history was written in Quedlinburg over 1,100 years ago. The historically significant town has been a World Heritage Site since 1994.
